Membership Information

BECOMING A MEMBER OF WARS:

1. Complete four observation shifts of four hours each. Call WARS at
(434) 823-5103 on the day that you wish to observe and ask to speak to the crew captain on the shift to see if you can observe that day.

2. Fill out an application, available at the rescue squad.

3. Fill out a form giving us permission to perform a criminal background check.

4. Meet with the Membership Committee for an interview.

5. Enter as a Probationary Member by vote of the Board of Directors.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Do I have to be certified as an EMT to join?

NO. WARS welcomes anyone with an interest in Emergency Medical Services or in helping the community. We will provide EMT and Driver training for you after you join our organization. We can also use members who wish to only drive our ambulances, maintain the squad building or assist with fund drive and financial activities

2. How long does it take to be certified as an EMT?

After beginning the class, which is usually offered 2-3 times a year, the class time (including clinical rotations) is 110 hours. This varies between 1-2 nights (or a Saturday) per week with a cumulative state written and practical examination at the end.

3. Why do I need a criminal background check?

The Commonwealth of Virginia says that you need one before you can perform patient care activities.

4. What kind of time commitment is required?

WARS requires that a full member run one shift per week, with a minimum of 33 hours per month. However, other membership catergories and time commitments are available depending on how you wish to offer your time.
