On May 19, 2000, members of WARS and Station 5 joined together once more for an extrication demonstration at the Crozet Shopping Center. WARS members present included senior extricators Kostas Alibertis and Gary Conley, junior extricator Roger Baldino, and Dan Shumard. The demonstration took place as a part of EMS week, with the intent of promoting awareness of rescue operations within the community. It was also an opportunity for members of these stations to practice various extrication techniques that are not often used all together during one incident. First, Squad 505 and Engine 54 were positioned so as to give the best lighting of the scene (1-2). Next, the team decided to first gain access to the interior by popping the windows and cutting the roof at the posts (3-5). Various methods were then used to removed the doors (6-8). This was done both to provide an open access to any patients inside and to break the lateral structural integrity of the vehicle. Subsequently, hydraulic ram bars could be used to roll the dash forward, a technique that is very useful for situations in which part of the patient's body has become trapped under the steering column (9-10). As can be seen in the final pictures, the combination of these techniques resulted in having complete access to any patients that could have been trapped inside the vehicle (11-12).
