And here is some information about the DZ mesa (takes a moment for this site to download).
Here is the school where the dorm is located in which we will be staying.
I was the “unofficial photographer” for the group that went this past July, and am sending you a copy of the links to the photos on our Park Street Christian Church website that Cheryl West-Knight, Michelle Messier, and I took last summer, in order to give you some sense of what our mission trip will be about.
The first 20 or so shots focus on the DZ school setting.
Sunday began with our trip to Three Corn Ruins.
Old Fort Ruin.
Navajo Lake State Park.
We drove to the Angel Peak Overlook just north of DZ on the way back from the Lake.
I tried to take photos of the DZ mesa from several different views & here is one from the north.
Sunday evening we met Gloria & Amber and had a gathering on the patio.
Monday morning we gathered together for our first work assignments.
My group, Shush, cleaned the building, did the first of the laundry, dinner, and prepared for Monday vespers. I was very impressed by the beautiful art work in the cafeterias.
Tuesday began with Michelle’s pictures of the sunrise trip to the top of the mesa.
Work crews formed again on Tuesday morning.
I joined Jan & Bob as part of the “DZ Business Office Soil Restoration Service."
Cheryl took these photos of the group that went to Harrison Davis’ home.
While the rest of the Business Office crew stayed inside Tuesday afternoon, I wanted to get a few shots of the Campus, starting with the playground made of recycled materials.
In a serendipitous moment, a lovely group of children saw me taking pictures of the playground and asked if I would take pictures of them.
John gave me directions how to travel to the mesa for closer photos and I stopped at several places along the way to take pictures.
We ran up to Blanco Trading Post, where we met Raheem John, 10 year old pottery maker.
Emma taught bead looming
John taught ring making.
The group, Bii, led our vespers and when Amy led a group poem writing experience.
all hell broke lose! I took nearly 70 shots in an attempt to get at least one photo of everyone leading a song, but some shots did not come out due to so much action, or due to the difficult time I had holding the camera steady because of so much laughter!
Wed. was our trip to Chaco Canyon, and I’ve put together a separate album of nearly 200 shots, including photos by Cheryl and Michelle.
We had a vibrant sky Wed. night.
TahNibaa Natani shared here incredible story of weaving.
The group, Lii, led us in vespers.
Anna drew beautiful pictures at Chaco that she shared with us Wed. night: http://parkstcc.smugmug.com/gallery/3219555#177953698
Thursday morning, John demonstrated how to break up the soil to additional volunteers of the DZ Business Office Soil Restoration Service. When we finished Thursday afternoon, we were proud of how good the yard looked and everyone of these weeds had to be dug by a shovel, hoe, or pick, due to their deep tap root.
Bob and I then drove to the Brethren in Christ Mission in order to help their preparations for their anniversary on Sat. We stopped on the road a couple of times to take pictures of the DZ mesa.
I particularly like a couple with sunflowers in the foreground.
And this one came out well from the back of the Mission.
Bob and I were given a tour of the Mission and were moved by this poster called “The Greatest Chief”.
And this one called “The Ten Indian Commandments.”
The Brethren in Christ Mission has a very important residential program for persons with addictions called “Overcomers,” and Bob and I were deeply touched by artwork painted on the walls by several participants.
We gathered together with the power out for a while on Thursday.
The group, Aht’ Tsaa’, led our vespers.
Persons continued to work on beads.
Play cards.
And we were blessed by an extraordinary Pow-wow by 3 brothers, followed by a discussion led by their father.
Friday morning, Cheryl took these photos of the sunrise trip to the top of the mesa:
and, later that day, took these of the trip to the rodeo.
Anna’s outdoor art was completed.
and so was our jewelry making.
We went to Blanco Trading Post for fry bread and shopping.
and then to Angel Peak again.
where we drove back past the overlook in order to get these shots of DZ that a member of our group suggested to me.
Driving into DZ, Miranda got to be with a couple of horses, and a sun dog appeared in the sky.
The group, Nah Shoii Dinch’izii, led our vespers, which including getting us untangled, sharing communion as well as gifts with John and Emma.
We were blessed with an extraordinary sunset (this one is my current screen saver)
Raheem paid us one last visit and Anna coordinated the painting of the sign for the Boys & Girls Club.
We had another beautiful sunrise Saturday morning as our Park Street Christian Church gang posed for one last photo.
