promotion. Our purpose is to carry out the
injunction of Washington in his farewell address
to the American people, "to promote, as an
object of primary importance, institutions for
the general diffusion of knowledge, thus
developing an enlightened public

go to American History Essay ContestStudents in the 5-8th grades are eligible to participate. The topic, deadlines and information are available on the NSDAR Home Page. Essays are judged for historical accuracy, adherence to topic, organization of material, interest, originality, spelling, grammar, punctuation and neatness. A title page listing required information and bibliography are also taken into consideration during the judging process. From the winners in this area one winning essay from each of the four grades will be submitted to the state chairman for judging on the state level. From there the contest continues until ultimately there are four national winners who receive gold medals, certificates and monetary awards. Please contact us by e-mail for more information. Christopher Columbus Essay ContestA new Christopher Columbus essay contest topic is selected each year jointly by the National Italian American Foundation and the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.

Junior American Citizens CommitteeThis JAC committee became an authorized DAR committee in 1906. The primary purpose is to encourage good citizenship with its privileges and responsibilities; service to God, Home and Country; respect for the Flag of the United States of America; respect for the history and government of the United States of America; and, respect for oneself. The JAC program is open to all youth, ages preschool through high school. Any teacher or director in the Albemarle County area who would be interested in forming an JAC Club, please contact us by e-mail. Albemarle Chapter is interested in supporting you! The JAC program also offers a national contest. The Albemarle Chapter will support interested students and assist them in applying for the contest. DAR ScholarshipThe Virginia DAR offers three scholarships for graduating high school seniors.
A high school senior who will have a concentrated study of a minimum of 24 credit hours in American History or American Government. The applicant shall submit with the NSDAR Scholarship Application:
1. A letter of not more than 1,000 words setting forth the reasons
for desiring the scholarship. The State's Winner's application will be submitted to the National Society for consideration for the $8,000 American History Scholarship awarded by the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution.
There are two $1,000 scholarships ($500 for second place) awarded to high school seniors who plan to major in any field other than nursing. The winners MUST attend a Virginia college or university.
Awarded to a high school senior who will continue his/her education at an accredited Virginia School of Nursing. In addition, the National Society awards scholarships to qualified students who are planning to enter a medical profession other than Nursing.
